I took a day off from work today and discovered something that I had to fight to overcome. As I was sitting down with my first cup of coffee, I started to think about breakfast and I instantly thought McDonalds, Burger King or some other high fat, high calorie mess. Then I started to think about the same thing for lunch. I started running the same restaurants through my mind. Do I want Arby's or Wendy's? A Big Mac or Asiago Ranch sandwich?
I have a refrigerator full of healthy, tasty options, but I wasn't thinking of that. I was reflexively thinking about eating garbage. After a couple minutes (and before any damage was done!) I realized what I was doing. What actually stopped me was when I paused to wonder how many calories were in a Sausage McMuffin and hash browns (370 & 150). That would be 520 calories. Now the kicker is that I would normally order two of each for breakfast. 1040 calories for breakfast. That isn't even considering the fat, cholesterol and sodium. Let's add to that an Asiago Chicken Club and medium fries from Wendy's (740 & 420). There's another 1160 calories.
My old habits were going to lead me to a 2200 calorie breakfast and lunch. I guess calorie wise it would be o.k if I skipped dinner, but that wasn't going to happen.
Instead, I caught myself. I had a healthy breakfast and lunch, 757 calories combined. My breakfast burrito was just as good as the Sausage McMuffin and only 290 calories. I had leftover penne pasta with sausage and peppers for lunch, which was better than a fast food sandwich and only 467 calories. Right now I'm having a home made strawberry smoothie for 148 calories instead of a McDonald's shake for 710 calories!
Now I know there are "healthier" options at fast food restaurants and I know what they are because there will be days when I'm on the road or just out and about and will end up eating there but that's not where my mind went. Today was a mini victory for myself.
Hey - how did you make the smoothie? And....were you able to make a single serving? ML
ReplyDeleteThe smoothie is half a cup of skim milk, half a cup of low-fat vanilla yogurt and about a cup of frozen strawberries all tossed in a blender. I'll add a little dash of vanilla extract and sometimes one packet of sweet n low. The sweetener is optional and I never notice it if I forget. If I want extra protein, I'll add in a couple tablespoons of peanut butter, but this takes it up to around 350 calories.
DeleteOh, it makes about a 14-16 ounce serving.
