The yard work is progressing nicely and I've taken on a second yard, my mother-in-law's. Here yard is flat and fairly small maybe 50 x 30 at the most. I decided to get a reel lawn mower to cut her yard. First of all, I don't want to lug my mower down there once a week, second I figure I can use the extra calorie burn. Luckily I found a used one on Craig's list. Although I did have a difficult time convincing my M-I-L that it was used. She kept insisting it was new and wanted to pay me for it. I kept telling her that it's MY lawnmower and isn't for sale! I thought I'd have to get a notarized statement from the guy I bought it from...
In addition to the landscaping, I've started walking at work. Our building is huge and is set of all by itself at the end of an industrial park. Twice a day (morning and afternoon) I've been getting up and walking around the building. I can do two laps and be back at my desk within 18 minutes. It's my non-smoke break!
We also have a nature trail that runs around our building. It's a one mile loop and runs over varied terrain. The building is on the high side of the trail, so you walk down one side of the loop and up the other. I haven't been on it since we moved to the building about 2 years ago, but I thought I'd give it a whirl during my lunch break. I was able to finish the loop in 25 minutes, so I am going to make it a regular part of my routine. I don't know yet if I'll do it every day, but I'm going to do it at least 3x a week, weather permitting.
So today, I did the two 15 minute walks going at a speed of around 2.5 mph (I'm a slow walker), then I walked around the trail for 25 minutes, averaging 2.4 mph and finally, I went down and cut my mother-in-law's grass which took about 30 minutes. It totaled up to over 1000 calories burned!
Sounds like a great plan to me. ML
